Chef Kern is an accomplished Culinary professional with a background in Biological Sciences. She has worked in various capacities as a chef in professional kitchens, restaurants, as a yacht chef, personal chef and private chef across the United States and internationally in Canada, South America, Europe, South Pacific, Bahamas and the Caribbean. She has broadened her palate, knowledge, and passion of international cuisines, integrative nutrition and wellness methodologies from her many travels and furthering education.
She began her extensive professional career first earning a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature & Writing with a focus in Journalism and Linguistics from Flagler College in 2008. In 2009, while sous chef at 1201 Kitchen, she jump-started the Edible Schoolgarden in her hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania at Mercyhurst Preparatory School that included a half acre garden and outdoor classroom to be used within an inter-disciplinary curriculum as a school-wide Wellness Initiative, and campus grown produce designed to supplement freshly-made cafeteria meals. In 2015, she additionally earned a Master's Degree from Edinboro University in the Biological Sciences with focuses in Marine Biology and Sustainability, STEM education, and studied abroad in Peru as an Amazonian botanical researcher of medicinal properties of amazonian plants.
Chef Kern has also contributed in Fort Lauderdale as an educator for South Broward High School's Marine & Maritime Magnet Program that exposes young people to career choices in the maritime industry while encouraging environmental stewardship. She has previously taught courses in Honors Marine Biology, Invertebrate Anatomy, Evolutionary Biology, and Oceanography. She has contributed as a science curriculum writer for Project S.T.E.A.R. under Pennsylvania Sea Grant and as a maritime education specialist on a floating environmental lab, aboard the research vessel, Environaut. She has worked in conjunction with such programs as NOVA Southeastern University, University of Miami- Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, and coral reef restoration with MOTE Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. Her efforts with the Marine & Maritime Magnet Program recently earned her an Innovation Award for her commitment to student achievement and the program's 2018 nationally certified distinction as a Magnet School of America based on strict standards of excellence.
